Helena-Reet: The time we devote to our children and our family is always used in the best possible way ever!
July 10th 2009 I read a story in Naisteleht Magazine and felt it was like the best one ever. It seemed so true from the point of view of my standpoint and perspectives. It´s hard to believe that family values could be described in a more simple, clear, understanding and sympathetic way. Even though I´ve read the article for several times I know I´m going to read it all over again!
All of us are inclined to…, but why generalize… I´d rather speak for myself… I´m inclined to choose the easy way and can be irresponsible from time to time. It is not seldom I find myself engaged in some kind of nonsense while my children are watching TV … This reminds me of the interview by Epp Reinmets with Chief Rabbi of Estonia Efraim Shmuel Kot. This is my favourite part in the article: “Why do we like to watch the family life of strangers on TV and how they are doing? Instead, I´d rather play with my children and talk to my wife. Because the extent we invest in our family life affects the future of us all”.
It made me feel ashamed. However, sometimes it can be for the best. As it can drive you to better deeds and more reasonable way of thinking. Now, getting older, I realize much more deeply how important it is to devote my life to things that really do count. I get more and more disturbed by the fact that for many people counting their money is of greater value than reading the Scripture. When I asked which religion people follow, the majority answered that they were irreligious. It´s so sad really. People are in a hurry all the time – but what are they rushing for? I asked my relatives: “Can you tell me the names of my grandgrandfathers and grandgrandmothers?” No, they couldn´t.
Sadly enough I´m not a role model either -my interest in my ancestors´ history and doings has not been huge. I was not keen on finding out things when I was younger. I´m so sorry I didn´t look for the answers to my questions while my grandmothers were still alive. Now that I´m a mother of two, my grandparents have passed away and I have nobody to turn to, although there are so many questions hanging in the air. So many questions waiting for an answer… There are six pedigrees that hide interesting facts and could tell so much about the history of our ancestors – as where I and my children come from etc. Oh, I would like to know… up to Jacob, Abraham and Isaac!
But now back to the article mentioned above. For me the message is clear: “Everything starts at home! The faith, commitment and devotion we raise our children with plays a fateful role in the history, it shapes both our childrens´and our history. We have a great responsibility towards our children as they take after us while they form their own picture of the world around them. The time we devote to our children and our family is always used in the best possible way ever!
