The controversy that has emerged within the Swedish Academy is very unfortunate and risks seriously damaging the important work carried out by the Academy. It is vital that all those involved now realise their responsibility for the institution and contribute to measures to resolve the conflicts. For members of the Swedish Academy, responsibility for the institution must always take precedence.

It is my firm conviction that the Monarch has authority over the Swedish Academy’s statutes, which were established by my predecessor Gustav III. In light of recent developments, I will consider the need to supplement the statutes, including with regard to the right to resign.
