NordenBladet – Yesterday, February 1st, marked World Galgo Day. For many, it is just a date on the calendar, but for tens of thousands of dogs in Spain, it marks the beginning of hell.
The hunting season is over. And right now, at this very moment, while we enjoy winter peace or dream of summer vacations under the Spanish sun, a silent massacre is taking place. Every year, hunters “discard” nearly 50,000 – 100,000 Galgo Españols.
Why? Because they are seen as “tools” that have become useless. But the most horrifying part is not that they are abandoned, but how it is done. It is not just killing; it is a ritual.
A tradition known as “hunting luck” dictates a cruel belief: the more pain the dog suffers while dying, the better the next hunting season will be. A dog that has brought shame to the hunter must suffer. Superstition claims that the greater the agony, the better the luck and the better the new litter of puppies.
“The Piano Player”: One of the most common and sadistic methods of killing is hanging the dog so that its hind legs barely touch the ground. The dog is forced to “dance” or tiptoe (as if playing the piano) for hours to avoid choking, until it finally dies of pure exhaustion.
The Situation Today
We live in the 21st century. We consider ourselves a civilized society. Many of us – especially Northerners and Scandinavians – often view Spain as a second winter home. We look for warmth, good food, and southern hospitality.
But does a country where such cruelty is still a tacitly accepted “tradition” truly align with our moral values? Can we enjoy the sunset knowing that at the same time, something so inhumane is happening somewhere in the olive groves?
This is not an attack on Spain. One person or one media agency cannot change centuries-old traditions alone, but together we can create awareness. Culture cannot be an excuse for torture. Tradition does not justify sadism.
Let us remember those who never stood a chance, and support those who are saved. Most importantly – let’s spread awareness. A large part of society has no idea that something this horrific is happening. Perhaps, by sharing this message together, we can help put an end to this horror!
