Foreign Minister Soini to visit schools in Lapland

NordenBladet — Minister for Foreign Affairs Timo Soini will continue his school visits, which focus on the prevention of violent radicalisation, in March in Lapland. On Tuesday 13 March, Minister Soini will visit the Ounasvaara upper secondary school in Rovaniemi and another upper secondary school in Kemijärvi. The school visits aim to enhance young people’s knowledge and awareness of the importance of Finland’s foreign and security policy in the prevention of violent radicalisation.

“People do not become radicalised and commit acts of violence on a whim; instead, such acts stem from a long series events, which can be addressed. I want to encourage young people to be active and step in. It is also interesting to hear what young people think and what they want to ask about the matter,” Foreign Minister Timo Soini says.

“I want to remind upper secondary school students about the importance of Finland’s foreign and security policy in the fight against violent radicalisation and terrorism. Finland works in various parts of the word to promote human rights, especially the rights of women and girls, seeks to reduce poverty in a sustainable manner, and takes part in crisis management. All this is important in efforts to reduce violence and marginalisation.”

The Minister started his visits to schools last year at the Tikkurila upper secondary school. His visits in 2017 included also the Tapiola upper secondary school, Maunula Secondary School and Helsinki Math School. In 2018, the Minister’s visits extend to schools in the counties. Earlier this year, he visited schools in Nurmes and Siilinjärvi.

Helena-Reet: Projects “Surprising Stockholm”, “Outstanding Oslo”, “Lovable Lapland”, “Incredible Italy” and many more

NordenBladet – This year we have planned several new exciting projects. First of all, we are going to introduce to Scandinavians some interesting destinations in Scandinavia but also some high-quality, exceptional and luxurious premium class destinations in Europe. Therefore, we are about to work out some projects concentrating on domestic tourism like “Surprising Stockholm”, “Outstanding Oslo”, “Lovable Lapland” etc and some summaries reflecting beautiful destinations in Europe, for example, “Incredible Italy”.

Last year we conducted an extensive research which found out that the average reader of NordenBladet is a 45- to 55-year-old wealthy, independent and successful Scandinavian woman. The average reader of OHMYGOSSIP is a bit younger, about 32 to 48 years old, a highly educated, adventurous woman who considers family values very important. We are going to coordinate our plan of action and marketing with the statistics and plan to introduce more luxury products, high-quality planned trips, exclusive emotions and options to spend money wisely and take the most out of life.

The main readers of our web pages, wealthy and highly educated women with kids, have truly earned this privilege, in addition to smart decisions, great work, and devotion, you also have to be able to rest and make the most of your valuable time. More and more people are looking for an above average (or even much more above average) expensive, top-quality and well-planned quality of service and well-organized action plans. According to accommodation search systems, the most searched overnight stays for families are about 220- 580€ per night/ per hotel room, furthermore, shopping for luxury goods and home items and adventure tourism play an important role while looking for a suitable place to stay while traveling.

In January, when I went to a travel trade fair named Soome MATKA 2018 with my daughter Estella Elisheva and represented NordenBladet and OHMYGOSSIP there, I came across a Lapin Liito (Regional Council of Lapland) tourism expert Satu Luiro in Original Sokos Hotell Helsinki lobby bar, where we were having dinner, and we talked about Finnish domestic and foreign tourism, about Lapland and discussed cooperation opportunities. Sometimes this kind of unexpected meetings undergird the birth of interesting ideas and interest in an area. No doubt that Satu is a professional and Lapland is a place we soon would like to reflect more actively. I should make it clear that I have always been interested in native forests and Nordic regions – it is just such a mystical area impossible to resist.

As you already know, cross my heart, we only recommend these destinations/ hotels/restaurants where we ourselves have been to and quality of which we dare to advise to the reader. It is not surprising that the hotel might have five or more stars but the service cannot stand any criticism, at the same time you might find a nice, comfortable, luxurious lower star hotel outside of the tourist area offering privacy and quality. You might be disappointed in the quality of the food in an over-advertised restaurant but you could admit that food for less than five stars is often, to put it nicely, crap. We only recommend the places where we have been ourselves and where we would also like to go back. The question is not where to spend more but from where to return with better emotions. We all would like to save money but in the name of a good emotion, we are sometimes ready to overpay as we live only once and would like to take the most out of life.

Foreign Minister Soini: Finland supports solutions to the conflict that respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine.

NordenBladet — Foreign Minister Soini reiterated Finland’s strong support to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine at his meeting with Pavlo Klimkin, Ukraine’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, in Kiev on 5 March. The ministers discussed the situation in Ukraine, bilateral relations between Finland and Ukraine and reforms in Ukraine.

“A permanent ceasefire is needed in eastern Ukraine so that there can be progress towards implementing the Minsk Agreement.  The only way to peace is through a political dialogue. Finland supports solutions to the conflict that respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine,” Foreign Minister Timo Soini said.

Minister Soini emphasised that Finland condemns the illegal annexation of Crimea into Russia. Sunday 18 March will mark the fourth anniversary of the day on which the Crimean Peninsula was incorporated into Russia after an illegal referendum.

“Finland does not recognise the illegal annexation of Crimea into Russia. There are worrying reports that the human rights situation in Crimea is worsening. I urge Russia to investigate all human rights violations, bring the perpetrators to justice and give international organisations unhindered access to the area. A military build-up in Crimea will also make the already difficult security situation even worse,” Soini noted.

Foreign Minister Soini emphasised the importance of the reform process in Ukraine. The reforms have a direct impact on the daily life of citizens. In particular, progress in anti-corruption efforts is also vital to healthy and sustainable development in society at large. Foreign Minister Soini and Ukraine’s Minister of Education and Science signed an agreement between the two countries under which Finland will provide Ukraine with additional assistance for reforms of its education sector. Under the four-year programme set out in the agreement, Finland will support Ukraine in the development of teacher education and the updating of teaching material. Finland will also significantly expand its assistance to Ukraine so that it can improve the energy-efficiency of its economy:

“In its support for Ukraine, Finland will focus on sectors in which we possess a high level of expertise. Education is one of the fundamentals of society and we are ready to play a central role in the reforming of the Ukrainian education sector. In the energy sector, we will focus on improvements in energy-efficiency, increasing the use of renewable energy and on developing clean energy production. These are all essential to ensuring a sustainable energy supply,” Soini noted.

Foreign Minister Soini is visiting Kiev on 5 and 6 March 2018. During his visit, he will also hold meetings with President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko, the chair of the Parliamentary Foreign Affairs Committee as well as representatives of Ukraine’s anti-corruption authority and civil society organisations. Soini will also meet with Finnish experts working in international organisations in Ukraine.

Minister Virolainen: barriers to trade should be removed, not increased

NordenBladet — The President of the United States Donald Trump announced on 1 March that he was going to institute tariffs on imports of steel and aluminium. The tariffs would be 25% for steel and 10% for aluminium. The decision is to be signed by the President next week.

The Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Anne-Mari Virolainen considers the announcement by President Donald Trump concerning the import tariffs as most alarming.
“The European Union is the main trade and investment partner for the Unites States. Barriers to trade should be removed instead of imposing new restrictions. Transatlantic integration is beneficial to both parties”, Minister Virolainen says.

Already at present the problems of overcapacity in steel are being discussed in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and by the G20 countries.
“The envisaged import tariffs are not founded on national security, but it is a question of protecting domestic industry. The proposed measures would not address the real problem, that is, overcapacity in steel and aluminium. Finland is very worried about the impact of new tariffs on the competitiveness of European and Finnish companies and employment”, Minister Virolainen says.

Studies on the impact of steel and aluminium imports on national security in the United States were launched in April 2017. The reports published by the Commerce Department in February recommend various means to restrict both steel and aluminium imports.

The European Union is the main trade and investment partner for the Unites States. The EU and United States economies combined represent about half of the world’s GDP. In 2016 the value of trade in goods and services between Finland and the United States was USD 11.6 billion.

In 2017 the proportion of the United States in total Finnish exports was 2.4% for steel, 4.6% for steel goods and 0.5% for aluminium goods.

”We wanted to update and modernise the visual image of Europe Information, while retaining the link to the well-known former logo, which has served us well. The new image is also well in agreement with the Foreign Ministry’s recently reformed visual image,” says Director of Unit Ville Cantell.

Europe Information is a provider of information on the EU for people in Finland. It is a reliable source of EU-information, producing various materials and responding to the citizens’ questions on EU matters. Europe Information serves everybody, focusing on teachers, students and the media. Danish politicians react to government’s ‘ghetto plan’

NordenBladet – Lawmakers from parties across Denmark’s political spectrum have reacted to the government’s announcement on Thursday of a wide-ranging plan to tackle what it calls ‘parallel societies’ in the country’s underprivileged areas.

MPs from non-government parties from both sides of the aisle gave their reactions following the announcement. The anti-immigration Danish People’s Party (DF) and the opposition Social Democrats, the largest party in parliament, both expressed support for the plan, which was presented in Mjølnerparken in Copenhagen on Thursday.

Smaller opposition parties on Denmark’s left wing were more critical.

New strategy aims to lift Denmark to the top of European life science

NordenBladet – The government has unveiled a new plan that promises to propel Denmark to the very top of the European life science sector. The strategy includes 36 initiatives that aim to provide more opportunity for Danish life science across the sector: from research to commercialisation, approval and delivery to international expert markets.

“It’s going well for Danish life science, but international competition is tough as nails. It’s particularly difficult for new life science companies to crack the market,” said the business minister, Brian Mikkelsen.

“The growth plan reduces some of the most formidable barriers facing the companies, and it boosts the entrepreneurship and shareholder culture. More startups and a digital transition will strengthen the growth possibilities within life science so Denmark and Danish companies can continue to be digital and technological leaders in the future.”

Consolidating position
The 36 initiatives are spread across seven core arenas: Attractive to research and develop in Denmark, More clinical research in Denmark, A world class pharma authority, Better access for qualified labour, More startups and digital transition, A goal-orientated internationalisation effort, and A new life science unit in the Business Ministry.

Currently, Danish life science companies are among the leaders in the global market for pharmaceuticals and medical equipment, as life science has become a Danish area of strength over the past 20 years.

From 2001 to 2015, full-time employment within the life science sector in Denmark has increased by 45 percent.
